Prisoners of Hope: The Problem of the Conscientious Objector (Classic Reprint) Excerpt from Prisoners of Hope: The Problem of the Conscientious Objector A brief statement is necessary to explain the origin of this book. From the first I had been greatly concerned about the treatment of conscientious objectors, and realized that the opening of a new era of persecution for religious and ethical convictions was a challenge which those who loved liberty and justice could not evade. Two motives prompted me: keen sympathy with the victims, though I did not share their views; and a desire that my own Church should be loyal to its ancient convictions, in spite of all temptations to surrender them for the duration of the war. In addition to signing various protests and appeals, I wrote twice on the subject for our denominational journal in the spring of 1916, and drafted a lengthy resolution dealing with all sides of the question, which was passed unanimously by the Conference of the Primitive Methodist Church in June of that year. In consequence of pressure from several quarters the situation grew easier, although it left much to be desired.
