Excerpt from The Memorial History of the City of New York br Manna hata the handsomest and most pleasant country that man can behold Henry Hudson br The Island of New York is the most beautiful island that I have ever seen Hessian Officer in Stone s Revolutionary Letters br She is a Mart of Nations The crowning city whose merchants are princes whose traffickers are the honorable of the earth Isaiah xxiii br History maketh a young man to be old without either wrinkles or gray hairs privileging him with the experience of age without either the infirmities or inconveniences thereof Thomas Fuller br This is a great fault in a chronicler to turn parasite an absolute history should be in fear of none neither should he write anything more than truth for friendship or else for hate but keep himself equal and constant in all his discourses Simon N H Linguet br Industrious persons by an exact and scrupulous diligence and observation out of the monuments names words proverbs traditions private recordes and evidences fragments of stories passages of bookes that concern not story and the like we doe save and recover somewhat from the deluge of Time Francis Bacon br They who make researches into Antiquity may be said to passe often through many dark lobbies and dusky places before they come to the Aula lucis the great hall of light they must repair to old Archives and peruse many molded and inoth eaten records and so bring to light as it were out of darkness to inform the present world what the former did and make us see truth through our Ancestor s eyes James Howell br I was surprised to find how few if any of my fellow citizens were aware that New York had ever been called New Amsterdam or had heard of the names of its early Dutch governors or cared a straw about their ancient Dutch progenitors A history to serve as a foundation on which other historians may hereafter raise a noble superstructure swelling in process of time until Knickerbocker s New York may be Vice Admiral Sir Colin Keppel arrived at the Palace early this morning on his return from a visit to a portion of the Grand Fleet br The King has sent the following message to Admiral Sir John Jellicoe on return from his visit to His Majesty s Fleet br I much appreciate the kind message you sent me It has given me great pleasure and satisfaction to have been able to visit a portion of the Grand Fleet under your Command I have been on board representative ships of all classes and am much impressed by the state of their efficiency and the splendid spirit which animates both officers and men I have not the slightest doubt that my Navy will uphold its great traditions br The message of Admiral Jellicoe to which the foregoing is a reply was not published at the time and it has been historical works, Excerpt from The Ohio History Teachers Journal Vol March Issued in January March May and November br The aim of the Ohio History Teachers Association is the improvement of the methods of the teaching of history and civics and the development of the spirit of cooperation among the teachers of these subjects in the state The best means of developing the interests of the organization and rendering the most service to the greatest number is through the publication of a bulletin br According to present plans the Ohio State University will publish a bulletin controlled by a board of editors which is to be the official organ of the history teachers of Ohio The editors have decided that the interests entrusted to them will perhaps be best subserved by issuing four numbers a year namely in January March May and November one or two of these numbers to comprise papers presented before the annual meeting of the Association and the others to contain a full discussion of some one topic of special interest to readers of the bulletin As the Association held two meetings in the present number will be found to embody such papers as were available from both of those meetings It is expected that the next or May number will deal with the teaching of English history in our high schools The third or November number will probably contain the papers concerning the national aspects of Ohio history that were read at the meeting of October together with the program papers of the session to be held in October and it is hoped that the fourth number January may treat of the teaching of American history in the high schools br Miss Alice M Rower of Cleveland the first secretary of the Association after studying carefully the proposal to issue a bulletin came to the conclusion that certain desirable ends might be thus attained br About the Publisher br Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books Find more at a target blank
